Our History
Dr. Douglas Walker founded the Huntsville Theological Institute in 2021 to promote biblical literacy and train Christians for leadership positions in the local Christian community. A professor at Legacy Bible College in Huntsville when that institution closed during COVID-19, Dr. Walker recognized the growing gap in biblical literacy and theological understanding in the evangelical community and the need for an affordable Bible education. He designed and established HTI’s educational programs and launched the school in the Huntsville area, with the first classes held in the fall of 2021.
Although HTI is a new organization with different goals, location, and organization, it maintains all transcripts and student records for its predecessor organizations, Legacy Bible College and Heritage Bible College. Many instructors, staff, board members, and supporters of HTI are Legacy or Heritage alumni and are working to bring the same high education standards to HTI’s students.
Today, HTI is focused on helping lay ministers, pastors-in-training, and even seminary graduates improve their biblical literacy and prepare for ministry. It accomplishes this through in-person and online classes, seminars and workshops on important theological or ministry topics, and a network of partner churches and ministries. Our contracted instructors are experienced pastors and Christian leaders from churches across the evangelical spectrum who bring a wealth of knowledge to our students.
